The association between genetic abnormalities and human cancers has become better understood since the genetic code has been deciphered. Certain neoplasms (cancers) are associated with genetic disturbances, some of which are congenital and some of which are acquired in life. One of these is the BRCA2 mutation, often discussed in the face of breast cancer.
On the list of other worries if you are positive for BRCA2 is the small but finite risk of developing an ocular malignant Melanoma. Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy, with an annual incidence of 6 per million. Approximately 2% of ocular melanoma occurs in people who are BRCA2 positive.
If you have been diagnosed as positive for the BRCA2 genetic mutation, you should at minimum have an annual eye examination and inform the ophthalmologist that you are positive for the BRCA2 gene.
The physicians at Pomerance Eye Center, PC are experienced at detecting uveal melanoma and include detailed retina evaluations with every routine eye exam. It will be our privilege to welcome you as a patient.
